I am looking for a set of the stretched saddlebag, and wanted to know which TOL Designs hard bags would fit my 2008 FLHX Street Glide?


I found that TOL Designs has 10 different hard bags that fit my 2008 Harley Davidson Street Glide. The styles differ in variations that range and from a 5.5” stretch to a longer 8” down, and 13” back. The bags are actually sold as a kit, with two stretched hard bags and a matching rear fender.

How much do stretched saddlebags cost?

Depending on the manufacture, credibility, process, and materials, the price of stretched hard saddlebags will vary.

I have seen hard saddlebags in the low $100’s and as high as $1,400 just for bags.

Of course, you will also have to consider the down and outstretch when asking about price.

Bags with deeper and longer stretch are going to cost considerably more.

TOL Designs begins the process with a saddlebag plug, which will be the exact representation of the saddlebag design to be made.

A release agent is applied to the plug, allowing the plug to separate easier from the mold.

Pigmented resin is then applied to the saddlebag plug, giving the mold surface a hard and more durable finish.

Layers of fiberglass and resin are laid-up onto the surface. During the laying-up process, the fiberglass mat is laid, then resin is applied. Any air bubbles would be removed with a roller.

Once the final layers of fiberglass are applied and the resin is allowed to set and cure, wedges are placed between the plug and the mold in order to separate the two.

Now that the mold is constructed, a wax coat is applied, buffed, and wiped clean.

To make life easier, a mold release wax is used. This wax also gives TOL Designs saddlebags a high gloss finish.

An even gel coat is applied to the saddlebag mold’s surface.

Once slightly tacky to the touch, a coat of epoxy is brushed into the saddlebag mold. Dry fiberglass is laid on top of the epoxy. Using a brush, the fiberglass is pressed down eliminating air bubbles and wetting the cloth. 2 more layers are then applied the same way.

Before the epoxy is completely cured, the two halves are joined together with more resin and fiberglass strips. Clamps are used to hold the saddlebag halves together until completely cured.

Once cured the part is cleaned with a wax and grease remover.

The saddlebags are sanded with either 80 or 100 grit sandpaper making the shiny gel coat dull in appearance. Primer is then sprayed onto the saddlebags and sanded with low-grit sandpaper until the piece is ready for paint.  


 What are stretched hard saddlebags made out of?

The 2 primary materials hard saddlebags are made from are ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) Plastic or Fiberglass.

Fiberglass parts are very strong and provide consistent wall thickness throughout the part and can quickly build thickness.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic is often used in the injection molding process.

You won’t be able to tell the difference between the two just by looking at them, both are durable materials and have similar beneficial qualities.
